Dawn Butler MP organises visit with Gambling Minister in Brent

I recently organised a visit with Baroness Twycross, alongside Brent Council, to highlight a growing concern in our community—the proliferation of gambling establishments across Brent.

It was important for me to show her firsthand how deeply this issue affects local residents. The concentration of betting shops in lower-income areas like Harlesden and Willesden Green is both cruel and unnecessary. These venues often target vulnerable people with free Wi-Fi and refreshments—fueling addiction rather than supporting community well-being.

While I understand the role gambling plays in the economy, it has reached excessive levels. I fully support Brent Council’s six-point plan for gambling reform and will continue to push for legislative change in Parliament.

Our high streets should reflect the vibrant, independent spirit of Brent—not be overrun by betting shops. Our message is clear: we do not want another one opening.
