Dawn Butler MP Hosts Successful Pension Credit Advice Surgery for Brent East Pensioners

On Friday, 22nd November, Dawn Butler MP held a highly successful Pension Credit Advice Surgery at the Brent Civic Centre, providing vital support to local pensioners. The event, which ran from 11am to 2pm, aimed to raise awareness about Pension Credit and assist eligible pensioners in accessing this important financial benefit.

"Pension Credit is a lifeline for many older people on low incomes, yet thousands remain unaware of their eligibility," said Ms Butler. "This event was about making sure that every eligible pensioner in Brent East knows about this support and gets the help they need to apply."

Pension Credit, a government benefit designed to supplement the income of pensioners, remains critically underutilised. While around 1.4 million pensioners receive Pension Credit, an estimated 880,000 eligible households have yet to claim it, leaving millions of pounds unclaimed annually. The advice surgery sought to address this gap by offering practical, in-person assistance from advisors from accredited charities, including Age UK Brent, Brent CAB, and Ashford Place.

Attendees praised the event’s welcoming and informative environment, with many receiving on-the-spot guidance to determine their eligibility and begin their applications. Advisors also provided detailed information on the additional benefits available to Pension Credit recipients, such as housing assistance, NHS support, and the Winter Fuel Payment.

For those who couldn’t attend the event, Ms Butler encourages constituents to check their eligibility and apply for Pension Credit online at the government’s website or by phone at 0800 99 1234.

"Helping pensioners access the support they deserve is a top priority for me," said Ms Butler. "I’m thrilled by the positive response to this event and will continue working to ensure no one in our community is left behind."
