Today is a proud day for me, knowing that my campaigning has helped to highlight and bring about this brilliant news for Londoners and visitors to London.
The Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, has pledged an additional £4.5 million to tackle mobile phone theft. That is delivery and action.
This investment by the Mayor will accelerate the Metropolitan Police’s Operation Reckoning, where organised gangs driving this crime are caught and arrested, breaking up their whole operations for good.
Keeping London safe is one of my main priorities and I am proud to have campaigned with the Metropolitan Police to highlight the urgent changes needed to put a stop to phone theft.
The Mayor has done his part, now the manufacturers must do theirs. So far, they have failed to introduce straightforward design and security changes that would make stolen devices far harder to resell or reuse. It's now time for major phone manufacturers to step up, take responsibility and play their part in ending phone theft crimes.
