Dawn Butler MP tables an EDM on Sexual Harassment in the Workplace

I recently tabled Early Day Motion 622, titled "Sexual Harassment in the Workplace," on 13 January 2025. This motion addresses the persistent issue of sexual harassment across UK workplaces, highlighting a significant legal action involving 700 current or former McDonald's UK employees alleging sexual harassment, alongside other forms of discrimination.

The motion underscores that 90% of these complainants were employed on zero-hours contracts, suggesting that power imbalances inherent in such casual employment can exacerbate vulnerability to abuse.

The motion also supports legislative proposals in the Employment Rights Bill aimed at strengthening employers' legal duties to protect employees.

It also welcomes the Workers Policy Project's "End Not Defend Sexual Harassment" campaign, advocating for a robust regulatory framework to enhance workplace safety and reinforce workers' and trade unions' rights.

The motion calls for a coordinated and well-resourced approach among the Equalities and Human Rights Commission, the Health and Safety Executive, and the new Fair Work Agency to eradicate sexual harassment at work.

As of 15 January 2025, the motion has garnered support from 20 Members across various parties, reflecting a collective commitment to addressing this critical issue.
