This month I spoke in Parliament during a debate marking the legacy of Jo Cox, ten years after her murder. Jo was not only a colleague but a friend, and I reflected on the joy, kindness and determination that defined her life and public service.
I spoke about the values Jo stood for compassion, solidarity and bringing people together and the importance of defending those values at a time when division, hatred and abuse have become increasingly normalised, particularly online. I also highlighted the growing threats faced by elected representatives and the need for stronger action to tackle online harms and political intimidation.
Jo believed that we have far more in common than that which divides us. In an age where too many seek to profit from division, her message remains as important as ever.
As I said in the debate, Jo would have been on the frontline challenging the hatred and intolerance we see today. Her legacy reminds us that politics should be about service, empathy and standing up for others. We could all do with being a little more like Jo.
