This year marks the 50th anniversary of one of the most important industrial disputes in Britain’s modern history, the Grunwick strike, which took place right here in Brent.
I was proud to support parliamentary recognition of the anniversary and the extraordinary courage of Jayaben Desai and the predominantly Asian women workers who stood up against poor working conditions and fought for their right to join a trade union.

Grunwick demonstrated that the rights of migrant workers are inseparable from the rights of all workers. Fifty years later, their courage continues to inspire us and reminds us why we must never take the rights won by previous generations for granted.
