Dawn Butler, Member of Parliament for Brent Central, has written to the Government to take action as the unemployment rate in her constituency increased for the fourth consecutive month.
The claimant rate has now increased by 695 in Brent Central since December 2018 including a worrying increase of 370 in the last two months alone. The last four months have now seen the claimant rate in Brent increase by nearly 25%. In the letter, Ms Butler called on the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Rt Hon Amber Rudd MP, to set out what she and the Government are doing to tackle this rise in unemployment in Brent. Dawn Butler MP said:
“These figures continue to increase at an alarming rate and represent a worrying trend in Brent. We cannot allow this rise to continue, which is why I have written to the Government to take immediate action to resolve this. “Last week I was visiting Park Royal businesses and their representatives expressed deep concerns for the future due to this Governments botched Brexit negotiations. It unfortunately comes as no surprise that employment rates are slowing and in Brent we have seen the unemployment rate rise by a shocking 24% in just four months.” “The next Labour Government will protect workers’ rights, invest in our economy and ensure that everyone gets a fair deal at work. As Member of Parliament for Brent Central I will continue to hold this Government to account and work tirelessly to deliver opportunities for all Brent residents and business.”
