Dawn Butler MP takes action to protect local businesses

In response to the Government’s Coronavirus business schemes I have today called for urgent further protections for Brent’s local businesses.

The Brent MP has written a letter to the Chancellor, which has received cross-party support, having been signed by Members of Parliament from every part of the United Kingdom; England, Scotland, Wales and Northern and from MPs across the whole of the house, calling on the Government to ensure that businesses not currently covered by the Government’s grant schemes receive the support necessary during COVID-19 pandemic.  The letter goes on to say:

“These companies no matter their size or base of operations still have overheads, wages and costs to cover during these troubling times and must be given the same level of support as other business to ensure their continued existence.

Last week the news of additional support for larger companies, with a turnover of more than £45 million, was welcomed but also highlighted the lack of support currently available for many vulnerable small businesses. Many of which keep our high streets alive and local people employed.”  Earlier in the week, Ms Butler launched a dedicated page on her website and wrote to over 5,500 local Brent businesses to ensure they were kept up to date on current support schemes.  https://www.dawnbutler.org.uk/business-covid/  Ms Butler has also requested that local businesses fill in the request box with any information that they would like her to present to the Government.  Commenting, Dawn Butler MP said:

“I have one of the most independent high streets in the country and I want to see it continue to thrive after this pandemic. I have been contacted by many businesses small and large, who have informed me they may have to close because they don't qualify or are struggling to apply for the Government’s grant schemes. Whether they are businesses operating out of the living room or are young tech start-ups, they all deserve support to survive this national crisis.     “That is why I took action to write to thousands of Brent businesses and will continue to lobby the Government to ensure that all business have access to the Government's schemes.     “If you have any specific concerns, that you don’t believe have been considered by the Government, and want me to lobby the Government on your behalf then I encourage you to visit my new dedicated webpage and get in touch! I always say that our community is our strength and never before has that been more important. Let's get through this together. Stay safe and well.”
