In 2019, I set up and launched the Bernie Grant Leadership Programme as the Shadow Minister for Women & Equalities and it is my pleasure to announce that it is now open to applicants for 2023/24.
This programme is named after Bernie Grant, one of the UK’s first Black British MPs. He campaigned tirelessly for the elimination of racism both in Britain and across the world. We draw strength and inspiration from the struggles of Black campaigners for equality over the centuries, and Bernie Grant is one of those individuals to whom we owe so much. He was a champion of his community, a dedicated constituency MP and has encouraged a generation of BAME leaders.
The Bernie Grant Programme is a six-month training scheme established to address the under-representation of Black, Asian and minority ethnic representatives at all levels of the Labour Party. The programme aims to upskill potential black leaders with all the skills they will need to succeed as a Labour Party leader within the Labour Party.
