Dear Commissioner,

I am writing to you to convey my very deep concern with regards to the policing arrangements in my constituency specifically in the Harlesden, Stonebridge and Kensal Green areas.

Over the past year I have received continual correspondence from my constituents outlining the very serious and drastic escalation of criminal activity in each of these areas. It was in response to this that on the 15th June 2018 I held an urgent crisis meeting with the community and the Metropolitan Police.

At that meeting it became very clear to me that adequate provisions are not in place. Indeed, this is not only my perception but a concern that was specifically voiced by your senior officers in my constituency.

At this stage, it would be remiss of me not to act on information presented to me.

I am therefore calling upon you to urgently institute a comprehensive review of the entirety of the policing operations in place for Harlesden, Stonebridge and Kensal Green.

I make this request on the following grounds:

Escalation in level of serious incidents

In the first six months of this year alone the London Borough of Brent has seen some of the most violent and heinous crimes in the entirety of London.

On the 31st May 2018 in one single night we saw three serious violent incidents with a shooting, stabbing and a murder all in close proximity to each other.

This increase is borne out in the data for these areas with increases in sexual and violent crimes going up by 25.86% in Stonebridge, 26.87% in Kensal Green and 25.09% in Harlesden between 2017-2018.

Capacity of the Metropolitan Police to respond

It was made clear at the meeting on the 15th June 2018 that the Metropolitan Police in Brent do not have sufficient resources to respond to incidents as they occur.

It was outlined that police are focussing their efforts specifically on serious violent crime, with which I agree given limited resources, however this has led to a somewhat state of lawlessness on our streets with individuals openly committing illegal acts such as drug dealing and prostitution.

Increase in every crime type

The increase in crime in Harlesden, Stonebridge and Kensal Green has not been limited to serious violent crime only. In the past year we have witnessed increases across each and every crime type. In every single category according to police.uk data there has been an increase in crime in either Harlesden, Stonebridge or Kensal Green. Whilst some increases may be negligible others are dramatic specifically in the areas of anti-social behaviour and vehicle crime.

Whilst I appreciate you are responsible for London as a whole, and that there is a pressing need for greater resources across the board, I strongly believe that based on the above information Harlesden, Stonebridge and Kensal Green require your specific attention and intervention.

Our local police do a fantastic job but I hear day-in and day-out the very real and damaging impact unchecked crime is having upon the lives of my constituents and, by the admission of your own officers, the police as presently constituted are unable to adequately perform the tasks required of them.

We therefore need an urgent review of the policing arrangements in place and to seriously consider what steps we can take, in conjunction with key partners, to address gaps in local provision.

I am, given the very seriousness nature of this issue, copying in the Mayor of London.

I may need to supply a copy of this letter to my constituents or place it on my website. If you have any concerns in me doing so please respond by return.

Yours sincerely,
