Dear Commissioner,

I’m writing to you further to the reports I have received of two non-fatal stabbings that occurred within my constituency on Empire Way at 8:20pm yesterday evening.

I am thankful for the quick response of the emergency services and that in this instance the wounds inflicted were not fatal. Violent crime is an area of serious concern in Brent. You will be aware of the cases of James Owusu and Oliver Tetlow both of whom were tragically murdered because of mistaken identity. The killers in both cases are yet to be apprehended.

It has become wholly apparent to me from my regular meetings with your officers that Brent is in desperate need of additional policing resources. That is why I wrote last year in June 2018 calling for a root and branch review of the policing arrangements in place within the London Borough of Brent. I would be grateful for a reply from you on the points raised.

I am aware that there is no magic solution to the problems we face. I am fully aware of the challenges you are experiencing insofar as policing the capital with very limited funding from this Conservative Government all the while experiencing rising violent crime.

However the policing offer being made to the London Borough of Brent seems inadequate to the level of need on the ground. It is of immense concern to me that the like-for-like funding agreement between the Metropolitan Police and Brent Council under Met Patrol Plus has been terminated as of the 31st March 2019. I would welcome a thorough explanation on the termination of this scheme.

It seems strange to me that under Partnership Plus local authorities such as Brent are receiving exactly the same offering as Kensington & Chelsea. I believe that the distribution of scarce funding should be prioritised to get maximum impact for every pound spent. The funding agreement to local authorities therefore should, in my view, be linked to crime and deprivation indexes to ensure areas with the greatest need get the greatest funding.

I hope that you will seriously consider this and, as always, I am willing to meet with you in my constituency at the earliest opportunity to establish how we may take this forward.

I look forward to receiving your reply.

Yours sincerely,
