This Government granted powers to the police, including the power to detain anyone “potentially infectious” which led to the police handing out extortionate fines for people breaking coronavirus regulations with no right to appeal.

However, we have now faced months’ worth of party scandals before the Police finally decided to launch an investigation to look at its own Government’s flagrant and repeated breaking of the rules!

It is one rule for the rule makers and another rule for the rest of us. It is time to take a stand.

I believe every one of the over 100,000 fines that were handed down during lockdown should be given the right to an appeal, to ensure fairness for all. That is why I launched the following Early Day Motion 894 (EDM):

That this House is concerned by increasing reports of alleged social gatherings and events in Downing Street during periods of covid-19 lockdown; is further concerned by the fact that the police have issued over 100,000 fixed penalty notice fines to members of the public for breaking covid-19 restrictions; believes that it is wrong that people had no formal right of appeal under those restrictions; and calls on the Government to immediately implement a retrospective appeals process for everyone who was issued a fine under those restrictions.
