Dawn marked Turban Awareness Day by wearing a turban at an event in Parliament to show support for the Sikh community and raise awareness about hate crime towards those who wear turbans.
This was the second annual Turban Awareness Day, which also falls within Sikh Awareness Month, and MPs attending marked the date by trying on the turban and learning about its history and significance.
The event was organised by Seema Malhotra MP, the Sikh Channel and others and was held following a racist attack on a turbaned guest outside Parliament in February last year. Many MPs from different parties therefore came to stand together against hate crimes towards religious groups.
Today during Sikh Awareness Month I joined my friend Tan Dhesi MP to mark Turban Awareness Day. It is important to appreciate, celebrate and acknowledge all religions and cultures in our diverse communities up and down the country.

“I was delighted to mark Turban Awareness Day by attending this important event in Parliament and I thank all those involved in organising it. Appreciating and respecting different cultures is key to living in a society where everyone is valued.
I appreciated wearing the turban to raise awareness for those wearing it and to send the message that we all stand together against hate crime towards Sikhs and all other religious groups. Hate crime and all forms of racism and discrimination has no place in society.
My constituency of Brent Central is one of the most diverse constituencies in Europe with people from all religions and backgrounds, and in Brent our diversity is our strength. So I know just how important it is that we appreciate, celebrate and acknowledge all religions and cultures in our diverse communities up and down the country.”
Following this, on Wednesday Dawn spoke on behalf of the Labour Party during the Westminster Hall debate ‘Contribution of Sikhs to the UK’. This debate was held to mark the end of Sikh Awareness Month, and Dawn spoke about the incredible contribution of Sikhs to the UK, and how the debate highlighted that we all have an important role to play to ensure there’s less hate in society, and more acceptance.
Yesterday I was proud to speak on behalf of the Labour Party about the incredible contribution of Sikhs to the UK. This debate marked the end of Sikh Awareness Month and highlighted that we all have an important role to play to ensure there's less hate in society, and more acceptance. Here's part of my speech.
