Dawn Butler, Labour Member of Parliament for Brent Central, has this week said that if Parliament is required to vote on whether to stay or leave the European Union that she will vote to Remain.

This comes further to a High Court challenge by campaigners who say that Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty can only be triggered by a vote of Parliament.

The case is due to be heard in October 2016.

In a letter to constituents setting out her position Dawn Butler MP wrote:

“If the High Court rules that there needs to be a further vote in Parliament then I will reflect the decision of my constituents which was to vote remain because I was democratically elected to serve the people of Brent Central.”

The London Borough of Brent voted 60/40 to Remain in Europe.

Ms Butler continued affirming her commitment to working within Europe:

“I am proud to be the UK’s representative for Women and Equalities on the Council of Europe¬Ö Sir Winston Churchill was a founder member of the Council of Europe which oversees the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Courts on Human Rights. As a member of the UK’s 18 full member delegation to the Council of Europe we will strive to continue to promote human rights, democracy and the rule of law across Europe through both the Convention and the Court.”
