Dawn Butler MP, Labour Member of Parliament for Brent Central, has this week written to the Secretary of State for Education, Nicky Morgan MP, directly challenging her over plans to force every school in Brent to become an academy by 2022.

In her letter to the Secretary of State, Ms Butler highlighted that forced academisation in Brent had been met with near universal disapproval and that the Chairs of Governors at 11 schools in Brent had written to her outlining their opposition.

In a war of words, Ms Butler put to the Secretary of State that:

“The consequence of your decision means schools in my constituency being forced to divert attention away from the core tasks of teaching and learning. Instead schools will be forced to excessively focus on structure and to spend scarce funds on lawyers and consultants to manage the complex and costly process of academy transfer; funds which could be better spent on new text books, school buildings and much more. This is irresponsible.”

Dawn Butler MP has pledged to fight the forced academisation of Brent schools, and in a prior letter to the Leader of Brent Council, Cllr Muhammed Butt, and the Chief Executive of Brent Council, Carolyn Downs, had called for them to join her in a Brent fight back against academisation.
