Dawn Butler MP to hold Energy Saving event, which could save residents up to £250 a year

BESW.pngBrent Central MP Dawn Butler will be running an energy saving advice session at the Willesden Green Library.

The aim is to help Brent residents save money by switching tariffs, cutting their energy bills and improving the energy efficiency of their homes.

The surgery on Friday 30th October will be part of the UK wide “Big Energy Saving Week” project, organised by Citizens advice and the Energy Saving Trust.

As residents brace for the “longest winter in 50 years” higher energy bills are set to put further pressure on already stretched household incomes.

Switching energy tariffs has been made much easier. Dawn said:

Many Brent residents are still using the same provider or tariff set following the energy market privatisation and do not realise they could save up to a possible £250 a year if they switched. Even the 26% of Brent residents on rip-off pre-payment meters can find cheaper tariffs”

As part of the Big Energy Savings week I want to empower Brent residents, by giving them the tools to help save them hundreds of pounds every year, by showing them how easy it is to switch on to a better deal and to invest in simple home improvements to make their homes more energy efficient.

During the cold winter months ahead those savings will make a real difference as many households feel the pinch, not just because of their own personal finances, but also from those budget and tax credit cuts inflicted by this government.

This is the first event organised by Dawn Butler’s “Green Cabinet”, set up to tackle energy issues. Member Jacky Peacock of Advice4Renters says:

This event isn't just an exhibition, it is aimed at actually saving people money, plus people on benefits may not know they could be entitled to grants for insulation or even central heating. Over 60s often do not use a computer so we recommend everyone to bring along a copy of their energy bills.  Armed with the full information we can help residents come to an informed decision and also assist in switching tariff or provider on the day if they wish to do so.

The event will run all day (9am-5pm) and volunteers from Brent charities will be on hand to assist all residents who visit the stand at the Willesden Green Library, 95 High Road, Willesden NW10 2SF.
