Dawn Butler MP says “I will vote to Remain in Europe”

Dawn Butler, Labour Member of Parliament for Brent Central, has this week said that if Parliament is required to vote on whether to stay or leave the European Union that she will vote to Remain.

This comes further to a High Court challenge by campaigners who say that Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty can only be triggered by a vote of Parliament.

The case is due to be heard in October 2016.

In a letter to constituents setting out her position Dawn Butler MP wrote:

“If the High Court rules that there needs to be a further vote in Parliament then I will reflect the decision of my constituents which was to vote remain because I was democratically elected to serve the people of Brent Central.”

The London Borough of Brent voted 60/40 to Remain in Europe.

Ms Butler continued affirming her commitment to working within Europe:

"I am proud to be the UK’s representative for Women and Equalities on the Council of Europe… Sir Winston Churchill was a founder member of the Council of Europe which oversees the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Courts on Human Rights. As a member of the UK’s 18 full member delegation to the Council of Europe we will strive to continue to promote human rights, democracy and the rule of law across Europe through both the Convention and the Court.”

I’m so impressed and encouraged by your stand – thank you for standing up for your constituents and continuing to represent the voice of those of us who want to Remain in the EU within Parliament. I have forwarded this to my MP – a fellow London Labour MP in a constituency with an even larger majority in favour of Remain – who is sitting on the fence. I only hope more MPs will have your courage in representing the 16 million people who voted to Remain.

Well done for listening and standing up for your constituents. I wish more MPs would do the same instead of trotting it the same old ‘the people have spoken’ line to explain why Brexit will happen. Only 37% of the people have spoken, in an advisory referendum. I hope that more MPs follow your lead and stand up for what they and their constituents believe in! I salute you!

So pleased to see this today, you have the support of many thousands of us in pre-Roman groups right across the UK and I want to thank you for making a stand. It takes bravery to do this in the current climate but be assured you are doing 100% the right thing. If more MPs could stand up and be counted as in support of Britain staying in the EU I think you’ll see a massive showing of support from people who right now are too scared to. Thank you again, and don’t let anyone put you off this most important cause – in my opinion staying in the EU is by far the best option for the UK, Europe and the World as a whole.
