Dawn Butler MP joins St Mungos homeless outreach shift on Brent streets

I recently joined homelessness charity St Mungos on a night time outreach shift on the streets of Brent to highlight rising homelessness in the borough.

The homelessness charity St Mungos provides the rough sleeper outreach service in Brent on behalf of Brent Council. The outreach service goes out early in the morning and late at night to find people sleeping rough and to build relationships with them in order to support them in moving off the streets.

However over the past five years homelessness in the borough has sharply risen. In 2010/11 the CHAIN database, which records information about rough sleepers, identified 39 people rough sleeping on the streets of Brent. However by 2014/15 this had increased to a massive 359 people. Statutory homelessness applications accepted as in priority need by Brent Council has also increased from 334 in 2010/11 to 847 in 2014/15.

I have joined St Mungos in calling for improvements to homelessness legislation to prevent more people from rough sleeping. St Mungos has highlighted that the Government has not included any legislation to tackle homelessness in its programme for 2016/17.

The increase in homelessness in Brent since 2010 has been truly shocking and much more needs to be done to tackle this growing crisis. This Conservative Government have no plan to tackle the problem. We urgently need new legislation to urgently protect people from rough sleeping and also to improve services for homeless people.
