Dawn Butler MP attends international climate change workshop in New Delhi

Dawn Butler MP joined parliamentarians from across the Commonwealth for a three day international workshop in New Delhi focusing on how parliamentarians can enhance energy security, tackle climate change and accelerate development.

Dawn Butler, one of only two British politicians at the workshop, chaired the third and final session examining specifically how parliamentarians can play a role in delivering the Sustainable Development Goals agreed at the global climate conference in Paris in December 2015.

The regional workshop was hosted by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association UK (CPA UK), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and the British High Commission in New Delhi.

The New Delhi workshop was held as part of the CPA UK's International Parliamentary Project on Energy, Sustainability & Development running from November 2015 - March 2016. The CPA UK will combine key learning points and best practice from these workshops in an e-handbook for parliamentarians on the implementation of the sustainable development goals in regards to energy and climate change. The e-handbook was launched at the International Parliamentary Conference on Energy, Sustainability, and Development in London in March 2016.

Dawn Butler MP said:

Experts have predicted that as India moves ahead to ensure that millions of people, quite rightly, have access to electricity and are on the grid they will use up over half of the world’s global emissions. Some have said that they could in fact use up the complete global emission. It is imperative that globally we work together to not only achieve our Sustainable Development Goals but to also ensure technology transfer so that progress is made as quickly as possible in the field of sustainable and clean energy.”
