Dawn Butler recently joined budding sports stars, keep-fit fans and social enterprises for an afternoon of healthy living activities and community celebration at Monks Park in Brent.
The Love Where You Live initiative, which aims to promote unity and culture within Brent, is planning to hold a series of markets and community events over the summer months.
The campaign emphasises respect for the planet, starting with respect for the local neighbourhood. From cleaning up local communities to celebrating green spaces, the Love Where You Live programme offers residents numerous ways to support and improve the local area.
Over 300 members of the community came together for the event which featured football sessions, complementary BMI tests and a range of treats and gifts from local businesses.
The event kicked off with a traditional African drumming performance from musician Baba Adesose, and participants - who ranged from 3 to 80 years of age - also had the chance to meet with Mayor of Brent, Cllr Kana Naheerathan.
Event founder, Davinia Roberts said: “It was an excellent day and I was just amazed it was happening after six weeks of preparation. With Love Where You Live it’s the people and the community that make it what it is.”
Speaking at the event, Dawn said: “It’s great to be here and to be able to support this fantastic initiative. The Love Where You Live campaign does a brilliant job of encouraging people to take pride in their local community, pursue healthy lifestyles and look after the environment.”
She continued: “It’s taking place at the end of my road and it is such a joy to see people chilling and having picnics in the park with their neighbours. I am tremendously proud to live in Brent, and anything that celebrates our diverse community and brings people from different backgrounds together will always have my full support.”
